Those looking for a traditional success story won’t find it in the life of Dennis Wong. The YOR Health co-founder and former real estate marketing entrepreneur wasn’t delivered by circumstance into privilege. He was born to a poor Chinese family in Hong Kong in 1962. His earliest memories were of the government-run projects where his mostly absent father often left his mother – and Dennis’ best friend – to fend for himself and his sibling, recalls Dennis Wong. YOR Health was decades away at this time but these early experiences helped shape the future business leader.
Things begin to look up for the Wong family in 1968. An uncle invited the family to move to California. The sunshine state had, according to Dennis Wong, YOR Health written all over it but at five-years old he was still unaware of what the future would bring. The family was excited on that fateful day in 1968 when they finally boarded a “big machine” and got swept up into the sky headed for a new life, recalls Dennis Wong. YOR Health was getting closer now and so was a new life in the United States.
The Wong’s relocation was terrifying for the family’s children, who had never been more than a few miles from their run-down home in Hong Kong. Despite their dire financial situation, the uncle who had brought them to the States secured housing in a nice neighborhood. Dennis Wong, YOR Health co-founder, recalls his first day of school, “I was excited,” he says, “at 10:00 AM…the teacher was passing out food.” But, humiliation, pain, and disappointment followed when he was skipped over for not having the money to purchase the milk and cookies. For Dennis Wong, YOR Health needed to come sooner rather than later but it would be a lifetime away for the young immigrant.
Dennis Wong, YOR Health co-founder, reached adulthood with some trepidation, fearing that his life would be no better in the future. He entered college at 22 and majored in electrical engineering. Unfortunately for Dennis Wong, YOR Health still wasn’t in the making and demand for his degree was nonexistent. After an inspiring talk with his sister he decided that a career in property brokerage would deliver the family from poverty, says Dennis Wong. YOR Health was closer now and fate had finally intervened with good fortune.
Life wasn’t easy in the United States. The Wong family was out of place in the predominately white neighborhood during a time when segregation was the norm, recalls Dennis Wong, YOR Health co-founder. It was even harder when he left for school each day. Knowing little English, the Wong children found it difficult to communicate with and relate to the other children, recalls Dennis Wong. YOR Health would be shaped by this feeling of exclusion, as Wong and his co-founder sister wanted to build a company that left no one behind.
Fast forward to the year 2000. Dennis Wong, YOR Health leader, was devastated to learn that he had severe plaque buildup in his arteries and was in the early stages of diabetes. Researching ways to improve his health, he stumbled upon a high-quality nutritional product manufacturer, recalls Dennis Wong. YOR Health was now a seed to nurture. According to Dennis Wong, YOR Health was born out of necessity and its success fell into place with a little hard work from the Wong siblings. For those family members – himself included – who use the products, says Dennis Wong, YOR Health is an ongoing blessing.
If not for Dennis Wong, YOR Health may have never found its way into the lifestyles of people across the world. The Wong siblings developed the company not only to help others get healthy but so that they could find independent success and never suffer the humiliation of their own tumultuous youth, say Dennis Wong. YOR Health stands today as a symbol of health, strength, and prosperity for its thousands of customers and IRs across the globe.
